Daily Activities

Students are grouped by age and when possible, by level of playing. Our flexible daily schedule includes: masterclasses, electives, floot choir, and chamber music. Additionally, students will get to hear daily faculty recitals. Our flootful days cover topics such as: breathing, tone, articulation, intonation, vibrato, technique, stage presence, practice habits, performance healthcare, working with an accompanist, and more!

Master Class

In masterclass students perform music they have already prepared, such as recent solo. Our wonderful and supportive faculty will give each student suggestions on how to improve their playing and their performance. (It’s really like a mini private lesson with an audience). Students must provide their own original piano parts for pieces that require accompaniment. Students should be prepared to play twice in masterclass.

Floot Choir

Floot choirs are formed by class level. Students may rotate parts for the first day or two and then will be assigned a specific part. When available, we like to use auxiliary instruments such as piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute. This is one of our most popular classes! The floot choirs will perform for the parents at the final concert.

Chamber Music

Chamber groups are small ensembles that are coached everyday by our outstanding faculty. Students are given more responsibility as the parts are more independent and often fairly challenging. Chamber groups are arranged by age and playing level (to the best of our ability). It is important that you give us as much information about your student as possible when you fill out the registration forms so that we can group them correctly. All chamber groups will perform for the parents at the final concert.

Electives

Two elective periods allow students to choose courses of study that interest them most. Elective classes are open to all ages levels unless otherwise indicated. Specialty instruments will be provided at an additional contest. See our sample list of electives below.

Electives

The following is a list of types of electives offered. You can see specific classes under each general heading. Each camp offers electives based on the specialties of the faculty at that location. It is part of what makes each camp special and Floot Fire so unique!

Fundamentals Classes

Students will learn ways to improve their flute playing skills in classes such as Building a Better Tone, Vibrant Vibrato, Terrific Technique, Rhythm Fun! and others.

Music as a Career

Students learn about career opportunities, how to prepare for college auditions, and how to select colleges.

Piccolo and Low Flutes

Students learn to play other instruments in the flute family. Classes include Beginner Piccolo and Low Flutes. These classes are for students with little or no experience.

Flutes from other Cultures

Students have the opportunity to learn to play the Irish flute or Bansuri. No experience is necessary! These classes require an additional fee for instrument purchase.

Practice, Performance, and Auditions

In our practice electives, students learn how to “decompose” a piece of music and tailor their practice to the needs of the piece. They learn how to organize their time and gain insight into helpful practice techniques. In our performance oriented classes students learn stage etiquette, how to deal with nerves, and/or how to become a polished performer. Audition classes prepare students for local auditions and chair tests. Students discover techniques to become a successful, competitive flutist.

Music Theory, History, and Literature

Music theory students learn the basics of how music is written by looking at the construction of scales and key signature, the formation of chords, and types of musical forms. Music history and flute literature students look at the evolution of music through time and the role of the flute in music.

Conteporary Techniques, Jazz, and Electronics

These classes explore the flute outside of traditional western classical music. Students explore new sounds, new techniques, and a whole other side to the flute! These classes include Contemporary Techniques, Jazz Improvisation, and Flute and Electronics.

Performance Healthcare Classes

Students will discover ways to alleviate pain, avoid injury and improve technique. Courses offered include Alexander Technique, Body Mapping, Feldenkrais Method, and Flooty Yoga. Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to move. Some classes recommend bringing a yoga mat or towel.
