The Claire Johnson Flute Soloist Competition honors excellence in flute performance and artistry in music making. This competition is open to all flutists through grade 12.

Competition Categories

Elementary Division

For students who have completed the 6th grade or lower.

First Prize $100


Junior Division

For students who have completed 7th, 8th, or 9th grade.

First Prize $200


Senior Division

For students who have completed 10th, 11th, or 12th grade.

First Prize $300


All judges’ decisions are final. All entrants will receive comment sheets from the judges.

Honorable Mentions will be awarded in addition to our first place winners at the judges’ discretion.

Competition Rules

Please be sure to click on each tab below. Read each section thoroughly BEFORE you record and submit your entry!

General Rules

  1. The Claire Johnson Flute Soloist Competition is open to all flutists. You do not have to attend a Floot Fire event to participate.
  2. The competition consists of a recorded preliminary round audition and a live final round recital. 
  3. Students may enter the appropriate division or may choose to perform one level higher.
  4. At the discretion of the judges, Floot Fire reserves the right to no pick a 1st place winner in a division.
  5. Flute entries only (no piccolo or low flutes). Pieces must written for flute and piano (or orchestra).
  6. Contestants must make new recordings for this competition. Do not submit videos from previous performances or other Floot Fire competitions. 
  7. US residents only.

Preliminary Round

  1. Registration must be completed and materials received by July 7, 2024.
  2. Winners of previous CJFS Competitions, must choose new repertoire. You may not repeat winning repertoire. (This does not apply to flutists who received honorable mention.) 
  3. All recordings must be made specifically for this competition.
  4. Contestants must perform a piece for flute and piano (or orchestra) no longer than 6 minutes in length (please make cuts if necessary).
  5. Unaccompanied works are not acceptable.
  6. Contestants may perform a singe movement from a piece or an entire work of their choice.
  7. Contestants will upload a link to their video in the application (see instructions in Submission Procedures).
  8. All finalists will be contacted via email within 7 days of the prelims deadline.
  9. Finalists will be announced to the public through social media. 


Final Round

  1. Students will perform live, in person, with an accompanist.
  2. Performers will need to provide an accompanist at their own expense. 
  3. Works may be no longer than 10 minutes in length and must include the piece performed in the preliminary round.
  4. This additional time allows students to remove cuts made in the prelims
  5. or add another short movement from the same work if they choose.

Accompaniment

  1. Accompaniment is not required for the preliminary round
  2. There is no penalty for performing without accompaniment in the preliminary round.
  3. Accompaniment is required for the final round.

Rules for Recording

  1. At the beginning of your recording, you must say:
  2. “This is my entry for the Claire Johnson Flute Soloist Competition”
  3. Followed by your name, competition category, and title/composer of your piece.
  4. No editing! The recording must be done in one take.
  5. You may use whatever device is easiest for you with the best sound quality available:
  6. phone
  7. tablet
  8. computer
  9. Do not add reverb to your recording.
  10. Caption your video with;
  11. Your name and competition category
  12. Examples:

Recording Tips

  1. Find a quiet space for your recording.
  2. Please limit visual distractions such as highly decorated walls and personal items.
  3. Dress nicely, you are on camera!
  4. Try to get as much of your body and instrument in the frame as possible. We want to see you perform!
  5. Use an external mic to improve your sound quality if possible. (not required)
  6. Watch and listen to your recording before you hit submit!

Submission Procedures

  1. Fill out the application on our website.
  2. Upload your video to any video/file sharing platform (YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive, etc.)
  3. YouTube users:
  4. Be sure that you set viewing options to Public or Unlisted.
  5. Google Drive users:
  6. Under share, set General Access to Anyone with the link
  7. Then scroll to and set View
  8. Provide a link to your video on the application. Be sure it works!!!
  9. If possible, upload a scanned copy of the music score to a file sharing platform (like Google Drive) and provide a link.
  10. This step is not required but helps our judges give more thorough comments. 
  11. We recommend that you delete the file after the winners are announced.


Audience Favorite rules subject to change

  1. This portion of the competition is not required; Audience Favorite is a separate honor.
  2. Submit your solo entry to the CJFS Competition and pay all applicable fees.
  3. Post your entry on Facebook or Instagram on your own page or parent’s page.
  4. Your post must contain the following text (required)
  5.  Floot Fire CJFS Audience Favorite entry
  6. Hashtags #cjfs24 and  #flootfire 
  7. Be sure to set your post to “public” so more people can see it!
  8. Ask your friends and family to “like” your post
  9. Prizes:
  10. The person with the most likes will receive $30 or a Floot Fire book of their choice!
  11. Random winners will receive Floot Fire swag .
  12. Voting closes July 19, 2024
  13. The winner will be announced via social media within 7 days of the vote closing.
